Due to the lockdown, you may have stored some fruits and vegetables and other food items in advance to avoid stepping outside too many times.
However, keeping them for a long time makes them dry or rotten even when kept in the refrigerator. So, jostling all you have bought in the fridge may not be a great option for you. So here are some tips you can preserve your vegetable and fruits for a longer period to ensure the freshness:
- Some vegetables like peas, broccoli and beans can be frozen for 25 seconds before freezing them instead of washing.
- After washing vegetable and fruits properly, try to pack them in produce bags because they are proficient in absorbing moisture and air. It’s the best way to preserve small party food at home for your loved ones.
- You can keep some fruits like peaches, pears, avocados, outside in the kitchen to make space for your fridge and you can be kept in the fridge once they have ripened fully.
- Although washing your fruits and vegetables is important to wash out the virus on the surface during the pandemic, you must make sure to dry them well before keeping them inside the fridge. The moisture can make them soggy and unhealthy to eat.
- Tomatoes are a few of the vegetables that spoil fast in the refrigerator and also affect the flavour. Try to store them outside at room temperature out of the sunlight.
- Store green and leafy vegetables inside the refrigerator by wrapping them in a paper towel so that they wouldn’t absorb the excess moisture. So before keeping them in the fridge, wrap them in a plastic bag and keep them in the fridge.
